I recently tried my hand at buying a lot from an actual auction house to see if I can resell for a profit or at least keep some nice coins for free/cheap. Didn't win several, but I was the high bidder on this lot of 19 esoteric central Asian coins. Some really strange stuff here!

1/19:

Unknown area, maybe 1st-2nd century AD?
AE "drachm" 19mm, 3.44g
Imitative of Parthia
Degenerate bearded head left
Degenerate Arsaces on throne holding bow, dot-legends around
Can't find anything even remotely similar. Unpublished?

Something-New---Barbarous-Ae-Drachm---Parthian-Imitative-1/19

Not expecting a whole lot of feedback on what this could be, but maybe Bob has seen one similar before?

Or maybe not. I've seen bronze Parthian drachms, and I've seen AE local imitations of official issues, and I've seen off-style issues from Parthia's eastern mints. But never anything quite this abstract. Nice find. Yep, likely an unpublished local imitative. I think your general time frame is probably correct, Steve.

I find the square "frame" of the reverse quite interesting. Whether it is meant to mimic the already degenerated legend of Parthia's later drachms (a degeneration of a degeneration), or whether it is meant to be a decorative border as may be seen in some of the chalkoi, I don't know. (Like at http://www.parthia.us/coins/pdc_40251.jpg and http://www.coinproject.com/siteimag...ia_27-22.jpg )

Clearly the weight and size suggest a drachm, of course.

Thanks for the input, Bob! I'm inclined to think the dots are just part of the legend and/or chair. Tough to tell from how little is on the flan, however.

Do you know of any sites or references for imitation Parthian coins? Up until now, I've never seen a non-official issue; couldn't find a relevant category on Zeno, either.

Steve,
There's no comprehensive single source that documents all Parthian eastern issues and imitative types, at least not that I know of.

However, Tom Mallon's site has a gallery that includes Parthian derivatives:

Schatz, who has the most extensive private collection of Parthian coins I've ever seen, has a "Parthia Related Coins" gallery and an "Eastern Parthians" gallery (with lots of bronze drachms with seated archer reverses) at:
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/ga...p?album=6503
http://www.forumancientcoins.com/ga...p?album=6213

The blurbs she wrote on her main page, explaining the contents of all her galleries, including these two, are very insightful:
