I've kind of wondered how much one of these could go for... any ideas?

That looks to me to be a waffled coin and not a canceled die.

I'm not an expert on them ... my basic level of understanding is that the mint 'waffles' damaged coins. I'm not sure the mechanism for how they get released from the mint.

Thank you david, yeah I knew this as a waffle coin I thought that was the same as struck with a canceled die, but you are right, I made the change in my title. Thank you again! :)

From what I understand the mint "waffles" the damaged coins before they send them out to a recycler. They are simply "scrap metal". As to value, check ebay sold values.

Yea, some "entrepreneur" had the idea to get a bunch of these slabbed and is making a killing on cancelled scrap metal! Unique, yes, collectable investment value, no. The mint has been "waffling" many coins for very many years. To find one in the raw is unusual. These aren't found that way, the cancelling process takes the coin out of the channel of circulation, different direction than packaging for distribution. When found in the wild, more like a "mint assisted error", mint employee tossed it in the circ bin for a CHRers cheap thrill!

Think they're neat, every error collector needs at least one! But sure wouldn't buy one, cheapest raw dime was $11.71, cheapest overall was 50- nickels to $3 a piece...hmmm,

Thanks team for all the replies. That's cool though, maybe some fell on the floor and they tossed it back into the pile that wasn't meant to be destroyed. Or... the mint employee maybe put it in his pocket? Lol we all know there is a bad seed in every group!

What I have always wondered is how does the mint waffle a coin.

Rolling press machine, not something you'd want body parts to go thru...
