Sifting through shield cents and found a Cud or chip. Pressed to see if it was an air bubble and it's solid.

I think it would be a Die Chip, but I will let the others chime in to see what they think it is.

It would not really make sense to be a Cud because don't Cuds usually start as die cracks from a design element. The die would not randomly break near the rim without any cause. John's idea makes the most sense to me.

with john, die gouge. You see a lot of these on wheat cents, not so much on newer cents.

That is called a die dent. The die was dropped make a dent on the outside edge of the die. Not all coin struck with it will show that same die dent for a long time.

Thank you for the comments. Coop's die dent photo example on the 2011 is spot on.
It was nice to find a relatively clean 2017P in the southwest and the die dent is a special bonus.
