I also picked this beauty up. I think I overpaid for this one... But the eye appeal is very high to me, and think she'd be a gorgeous addition to my type set.

Would you like me to post the actual photos in this thread, instead of just links?
It might help to get some more opinions if people could see the coin photo easier.

Snooba.

Hard to tell for sure from the photos if there is any rub on the high spots (thigh, breast, leading wing edges.) There appears to be a few bag marks on the right obverse field (right side as one looks at the coin). I'm guessing AU-55 if there's rub to MS-63 if there isn't.

Nice looking coin. :o)

She's a nice one johnny! I see no evidence of wear on the high spots of this series (thigh, shield, head on the obverse; eagle's head, wings and talons on the reverse). The flattening of the right talons is typical on most examples and is caused by the strike, not wear. You will also note the definition in the stars on the obverse. The stars on the left are well defined, but on the right they flatten out. If it shows no evidence of cleaning, I would say MS61. The 1858 is one of the more common dates in the series and perfect for a type set.

It looks gorgeous (albeit dipped). It probably saw very little, if any, time in circulation. From the photos, either AU58 or MS63. If there's little luster, it could grade MS62. If there's no luster at all, it might net down to AU50 and would bodybag at any service.

thanks guys! I don't mind you adjusting the photos at all. How do you post them like that to begin with?

I would be enthralled if this coin would grade in the MS range! I bought it as a "choice AU", and paid what I thought to be a little more than book value because of the exceptional eye appeal. Even if it were dipped/cleaned; id still love to have a coin this old with MS details.

I took a chance, as this was from an ebay auction....but the seller has %100 feedback and a good return policy.

Johnny,

Click on the edit icon at your first post and you will see what I removed to make them post directly. Sometimes it's not always best for large files because people with dial-up connections have to wait for the page to load instead of clicking on a link if they choose. But I think most if not all are past dial up these days.

Having said that, once you post the image address, in a nutshell, remove everything before http and everything after jpeg. We have a section for practicing this at the bottom of the forum. I should have left your links so you could compare, but I forgot to.

It is a nice looking coin although I would certainly be concerned that it might be cleaned (note the only signs of age or toning are in the outer portions near the rims). AU55 details, I would think.

I feel confident that it is AU. For me the indicator is the difference in color between the open fields on the obverse verses the protected field around the stars. The protected areas were exposed to less friction during the coin's brief time in circulation so there was less disruption to the mint luster. The open field however has a slightly darker grey color from friction. The same effect is visible on the reverse but is not as obvious.

"Choice AU" seems like an appropriate details grade. It likely was dipped but it hasn't suffered too badly and has nice eye appeal. As SeatedNut says, this is an excellent type coin.
