Hopefully the packaging will add something worthy to the coin and stamp set.

The 93 BoR half dollar is the only modern commemorative half dollar to be made of silver, with the exception of the 82 Washington commemoratives that started the modern commemorative era. I suspect that helped its sales.
I suppose with the low mintage this set could sell out, but who will be buying it? Are there that many coin collectors who want to pay extra for a stamp and a cardboard holder? I expect that anyone who wants the commemorative half dollar will be able to buy it by itself for less than this set will cost.
Of course it will be released in October, so if the Mint does a good job of tying it into breast cancer awareness month, then that could help sales as well.
I guess we'll find out a year from now.

Designs for the BCA commemoratives have been released. You can see them at Coin News or the Mint's press release. Another commemorative design that didn't wow me from first look. Also, having the same design for all 3 coins is not the best decision IMHO. Not the normal practice (only the Baseball HOF coins were like this) and probably won't help sales. It would have been nice to see a color rendition of the pink gold $5 coin Quote: 85% gold, 14.8% copper, and 0.2% zinc, according to United States Mint Design and Engraving Manager Ron Harrigal. as well. And why alloy with zinc, instead of the normal silver?

What would you all have preferred? I think it's a fine design, but to each their own.
Perhaps the composition of the gold coin facilitates the pink coloration.

Well, the first thing my wife, a survivor for 16+ years now, said when she saw the designs was "What does lepidoptera have to do with breast cancer awareness?"
So, I guess anything that would have been associated with breast cancer awareness, rather than butterfly collecting, would have been preferred.

Quote: Well, the first thing my wife, a survivor for 16+ years now, said when she saw the designs was "What does lepidoptera have to do with breast cancer awareness?" I am no expert on symbolic imagery, but my guess is a reference to metamorphosis or rebirth. Jbuck finishes reading the release...

Well, according to the Mint's press release, the Quote: reverse design depicts a Tiger Swallowtail butterfly in flight, a symbol of hope. Not a symbol of hope I'm familiar with, but maybe it is? at least to the artist anyway.

Quote: Something along the lines of France's version that actually dealt with the subject matter would have been much preferred. There's no way the prudes would have allowed such a blatant design. Frankly, I'm surprised they actually used the word "breast".

with that sentiment. The regular prices for the halves are crazy, especially since they feature a shared design. I expect that for the average collector, if they're going to spend that kind of money, they will probably go for the one with silver. Nevertheless, it should be interesting to follow the sales for the halves.

The Mint is going to price themselves out of business at this rate.
