Personally, I would not purchase this coin, because of the odd colors.
Great reverse strike.
IMHO, AU and cleaned.

Perhaps a slight circulation rub on the cheekbone, I'd say AU-58. Might have been dipped in the past, but I like the toning. Nice looking coin!

Super nice 22-D, and nice pictures too.

Pretty solid 63, very well struck for a 22D. The surfaces are questionable enough that I don't think it'd slab but still a nice coin.

Thanks for the info everyone. It is a nice looking coin, even with the three nicks on the reverse and the odd coloring on the reverse. It's actually the opinion of it being cleaned or not that puzzles me. Before I buy a coin, I want to know if has been cleaned, since I'm far from being an expert on that subject.

Tough call. Coloring does look a bit odd. Still a beauty. I'll say MS details.

Finding a 22D struck that well is a rare thing. I'm a little suspect of the beard though, it may have been tooled or strategically taken some hits. The pictures are too small to tell much.
Too bad it has an old cleaning or exposure to some chemical. If it was mine, I'd have it sitting on a window sill for a few years. It can help tone them back down to a more natural color. You can't undo the cleaning but you can definitely make some improvement.

Quote: Before I buy a coin, I want to know if has been cleaned, since I'm far from being an expert on that subject. A good rule of thumb for non-experts... If it looks fishy at all, don't buy it.See how splotchy the color is? A coin that old should have a smooth, even, brown patina.
