Hmmm...that is concerning. Do you know the storage history of the set? I don't know what that material is but I am reminded of similar red "fuzz" on U.S. proof set coins from that era. I haven't seen detrimental effects from that. Your set seems to have something else going on and that cent is surely a concern.

That case is known to damage coins, you should remove them and give them an acetone bath.

Unfortunately, a lot of that damage will be permanent.
It is so unfortunate that the case has done that.

I have the same complete set and yours looks complete. The red flock was an issue on the 71-73 sets and was discontinued starting in 1974. To clean your coins, see this post by SilverDon. http://goccf.com/t/226414

I'm just hoping that when you turn that quarter over,..we don't see a large bust..
Now that would be a real loss..

Quote: Now that would be a real loss. That happening is what has kept me from touching them . Thanks for the link JimmyD , I can can only hope that mine will turn out somewhat as well as SilverDon's Will post pic's after I take them out and after the distilled water treatment . Thx again for the input . Fingers crossed.! ( except for the penny )

Well, here they are without the reddies . The penny is doa , although me thinks the obverse's may have fared a little better than the rev's . Need a little help on how to deal with silver dollar. Also , how long should I leave them in the distilled water? Thx.

The obverse of the penny having the "leopard spots" for lack of better term , that is caused by the interaction with the red fuzz?

You can clean the flock off the plastic holder, soap and water, a gentle scrub. I took a qtip to the coins rims, not a bad result. Leopard print pattern on the cent is consistent.
