Hi everyone :) How do y'all ship coins to TPG's like ICCS, PCGS, NGC, etc? I was just quoted $1500 by FedEx to mail coins from BC to ICCS in Ontario. The book value of the stuff I'm sending is about $50K so the rate included insurance to cover the value. $1500 seems crazy to me! Has anyone got any tips for getting more economical shipping/insurance rates?

Did Fedex ever see you coming. At that rate take a West Jet flight to Toronto and walk in the front door and hand over your coins to Brian or Scott at ICCS. Seriously we ship those amounts on a fairly regular basis using Canadapost Priority Courier . Thirty years never an issue! A comment on Fedex and how reliable they are.........Dix Noonan Webb recently shipped my auction lots from the September coin sale held in London . A not inconsiderable amount was involved . The package was left unsigned for at the WRONG address and on the front porch. Thank goodness my neighbours are honest !

For that money you can fly there, deliver the coin, fly back, and do the same again to pick up the coin again... I agree, the price is crazy. I hope they put a zero wrong...

Registered and insured via US post. I've sent up to 65 coins valued near your dollar value and it was about $65 if I remember correctly from my last shipment.
In any case, it wasn't over $100 for certain.

Actually, I just got a call back from FedEx and they will not insure coins unless they are travelling to the Royal Canadian Mint. Soooo I guess I'll reword my question.... Who do y'all use to ship coins to TPG's? And do they insure your coins?

Thanks to the American for suggesting USPS, but it is not going through the US unless the sender is going to drive across the border to send it. Canadapost is the easiest way but may not let it be classified as coins. DHL ? I used to work for them and they do the same as UPS, Fedex, etc. Seems they would be much cheaper than $1500, but I could be wrong.

Pacificoin: Does Canada Post Priority Courier allow additional coverage for coins, or does a private insurance policy cover it, if you don't mind my asking?

Cda Post with a tracking number..and quickest method possible to reduce the chances it will get mis placed. I always think insurance is useless unless you KNOW exactly CDA Post's policy for rare items or whatever you are shipping. Lots of disclaimers and legal weasal words when it comes time for a claim. Mind you, that's only a general insurance comment, and nothing Cda Post specific.

I spoke with someone at Canada Post and was told it's illegal to mail money so for this reason, they do not provide any insurance for a coin or a package of coins that got lost... yikes!
Pacificoin: Do you mind sharing which private insurance company you use? I'm assuming rates vary with each provider.

Go to your LCS!
Any coin dealer that deals a lot with ICCS already has an insurance account... I'm sure for a small fee they'd be happy to ship your coins to ICCS especially if you're a good customer.
Never hurts to ask in my opinion.

This causes me to wonder what Canadian homeowners or tenant insurance policies are like. Here in the US they cover your personal property, lost or stolen, anywhere in the world. Of course you'd have to deal with deductibles, and coins, jewelry etc you'd have to itemize and pay extra, but certainly not $1500.
The second totally off topic thing this reminds me of is shipping a bicycle using a standard bicycle hard case. Both UPS and FedEx were rigged such that an extra one inch of girth measurements, over the standard cardboard box bike manufacturers use, cost me an extra >$100 or so. Makes me wonder if coin/other valuables shipping is also intentionally skewed. Like if you put coins in a giant box, claim it as artwork or something instead of coins, and insure for 50k, is the cost more or less? :)
