Don't forget the mint is mandated to release for Collectors mostly copper cents.
I am thinking these might be like the Silver Ikes, and be from the S mint though.
If they go to steel, expect carbon steel, with some sort of coating.
Stainless Steel has Nickel in it, which they are trying to avoid.

It says that they are still debating, and surely a long
way from passing anything.
Maybe they should just look at temporarily halting production
of the cent and nickel for a while. ?
They could just make NFC coins and maybe a few here and there
if there is a serious shortage. That would keep them from huge
losses, without worrying about constitutional issues and trying
to revamp coinage.
From what I understand, different departments of the Treasury
and Mint are against this, while others are for it.
Depending on exactly how this affects their jobs...
Same with congress. There are those crying foul over the
congress putting it's responsibilities off on the Treasury.

The hot-shots in Washington don't realize ever since U.S. stopped backing our currency with gold and silver the economy has been on the decline. The ONLY reason our money is worth anything is because the government tells us it is. I wish our economy would do as well as it did in the forties and fifties. I've got a great new idea for the government to turn a profit at our economic expense: Pennies and nickels minted on plastic bingo chips. -PP

This way they can give you a dollar that is only worth 7 cents, as opposed to a dollar that is worth a dollar. It is a hidden 93 cent tax that the sheeple happily pay. Oh, then there is the gold reserve... All that dough became free for political plunder. A HUGE tax levied on the American people that they stilldon't comprehend or recognize! It's all gone now. Even EMP on a small scale could ruin some one's life when all their cyber-money is obliterated. It's a wonder that it hasn't happened yet. We are nearly as vulnerable now, considering how digital money is. I guess at this point it is more profitable to steal some one's cyber-money and/or identity than to just erase it. Even the problems we have now, with ID theft alone, would be harder to pull off with tangible value to our money. Edited by ratio411

Current money has value because it is the only way people can pay their taxes. That fact creates demand. That demand is increased by the fact people have started to borrow dollars for cars, houses, and so on. They need dollars to pay those debts. It is the debt that give the money its value and creates it. If everyone was out of debt including the U.S. government, then the only money in existence would be coinage.
