Well this is rather cool to be apart of. I'm glad that I went with my gut feeling because a lot of people told me this was damaged. But I sent pictures of this coin via email to Mike Diamond and he told me that it resembles planchet defect/planchet damage!! He even told me that he has never seen this type of planchet damage and it should make for an interesting read. now mind you, he could receive this coin in the mail, and determine that it's not planchet damage (and I highly doubt that) but if it turns out to be the error he thinks, it would be totally cool to have this coin with my name featured in the article!

It is an interesting looking coin.

Keep us posted.

And, yes! It would be really be something to find something that Mike Diamond hasn't seen before.
Rest in Peace

I'm going to assume that's the correct color per side, due to background, if so then that becomes an interesting point as well, would indicate that each side was exposed to different environments...most likely wouldn't affect the gouges...interesting indeed!

Yes that's the correct color. I thought the color looked a little weird too. I wondered what that was about. But thanks everyone for looking at my post. Hopefully it is still an error cause it's one of a kind if it is!! Can't wait to get this one in the mail. :)

Just wondering - if planchet damage why would the lines remain especially on the devices when it was struck, pushing metal into the voids of the die?

Good question, we will see what mike says when he has the coin in hand! I will explain the truth even if its an error or not.
but I would think if there is a deep gouge, that the missing flat space would make the metal cave in because it wasnt exactly struck on a flat surface? think of placing sand on a hard ground that has trenches, the trenches would still display trenches, unless you fill it with extra sand or smooth it out? I know thats just sand, and not metal, but its kind of the same concept. if there is gouges on a flat surface, the missing space would mean that the metal has to go somewhere under all the pressure..

Just my opinion..

I never did revisit the original topic about it till just now. I still can't think of what it may be off the top of my head.

That would be awesome to have a coin featured by Mike Diamond if it all works out. Good luck!
