It is called a Civil War Token. They were issued by private businesses because people were hoarding coins. Many slogans, Google them.

There are catalogs for these but I don't know of any myself on line. These go for $20 or so on ebay.

This one is damaged and worth no more than $12-15 tops as only a newer CWT collector would likely buy this.

Or someone who thought it was a weird Indian Head cent.

I have recently purchased an old coin collection that has this exact coin except it's BU. It's 1864 and has the tiny c under the wreath on the reverse. Had a few people say its fake. Can anyone tell me if it's real or a copy? This one already pictured is real?

Although this appears to be a Civil War token, I suspect that it's a modern fantasy, a novelty item. I've seen a few of them in BU condition at shows; the last time being at the FUN show a few years ago. Such was the consensus among a few token dealers I know. The OP's piece appears damaged; this, perhaps to make it look older?

Let's see what some of our other CWT guys say. My patriotic book is presently packed away. If this is the same one I recall seeing, the dies are unlisted.

I think this one is a fake as well also usually a tiny C on a coin or token means it is a modern copy....

If you're referring to the one with which this thread started off, I have to concur, as I don't see a cataloged match for the obverse die.
