As far as I know there was no Type 2 in 1972...
There is a P, D, S 40% BU and a S 40% Proof.

mtuma3, there were three different reverse hubs used on the 1972 p coins that year, identifiable by differences in the features of the earth on the reverse. They are referred to as type 1, 2, and 3. The type 2 being the scarcest of the three.

You should be able to get one in MS-64 for under $200.00. But my advise is to purchase a slabbed one if you are going for a high grade.

Type2 has incuse Islands.

Quote:
The shape of the Earth's visible landmasses are specific to three different hub varieties for the 1972 (P) issue. These are popularly collected and referenced in Whitman's Guide Book of United States coins as Varieties 1-3, but more generally referred to by collectors and dealers as Type 1-3. The graphic below provides collectors with major pick-up-points for each variety. Varieties 1 and 3 are the most prevalent, while Variety 2, struck using dies intended for Proof versions of the coin, is scarce. The number of Type 2 coin emissions is not understood with certitude, but known examples released in March and August 1972 exhibit a number of identifying die markers. As the 1972 Type 2 commands a significant premium over the more common Type 1 and 3 1972 (P) Eisenhower dollars

Thanks for that, very useful. Agree a slabbed Ty 2 should be available in 64 for around $200; after that it zooms.

I had to get out my 1972 Ike that my grandfather passed down to me after Coop posted the guide for identifying types 1, 2, and 3. I always hoped mine was a type 2, but I am pretty certain now that it's a type 3 based on the islands being located below Florida.

I just picked up 10 of these at the bank. 5 of which were 1972's (2 p's and 3 d's) I have now got a 72-p Type 1 and a 72-p Type 3....teller asked me how many I wanted.....I am so going back for more! I also found a 71-d talon head and a 74-d die clash!
