I saved the best (or at least the most expensive) for last. I really did not expect to see a coin like this in a local dealer's case. It has a bit of a history:

A couple recently discovered and joined our coin club. They were motivated by the inheritance of a large gold coin collection and wanted help to sell off the pieces. Some of our dealer members jumped at the chance (of course!) and part of the collection has started showing up in the dealers' inventories. This piece reportedly spent the last several decades sitting in a coin album but now it's mine.

I would always be cautious about a raw coin like this but the pedigree seems solid and I'm confident it's authentic.

How does she grade?

A gold coin in any condition is a thing of beauty. This would make a wonderful pocket piece!

must be nice to be able to have a $2,000 coin as a pocket piece.

Solid EF-40 and snooping up on 45.

Really a nice example. All of the nicks and ticks its had from circulation has nothing distracting.

I like your pick on this one.

I'm calling it 40 because this one is known to be well-struck; 45 in a slab would meet with no objection from me. This is a wonderful acquisition, a genuine addition to the popularly-known Census and a coin to be proud of.

Very pleased with the PCGS result which could be considered a tad generous. For $1800 plus grading fee it looks like I got a good deal.
