Hey everyone I'm new to the coin hunting game and came across this 1982 penny and had already heard about the small date and large date error. After a bunch of research I figured out it was a large date. However, I did notice on the reverse a possible cracked die. I had written it off as a mere scratch but after the purchase of a magnifier I realized it is engraved. What are your thoughts? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

to CCF! Large and small dates in 1982 cents are not errors, by the way. We'll need better pictures to help you with your possible cracked die. But if it's engraved, it's probably a scratch/gouge/PMD. The "crack" would be raised (not inset/incuse/"engraved") if it were a die crack.

The large and small dates are design varieties, not errors. We will need much closer/clearer pics to tell anything about a die crack. &

Oh, okay. Thanks for the information about the jargon variation. I worked hard to get those so I'll try my best but it does look like it's sunk in and not protruding so it may just be a gauge.

Is that a good enough picture?

I messed with your pic a little but, it's really not clear enough to give a conclusive answer: To me, there are two possibilities. Since you said it is incuse and not raised, it can't be a die crack. It is most likely damage in the form of a scratch/gouge on the coin. It could possibly be a struck-through debris error. That's a lot less likely and we would need really clear pics to see metal movement and such around the line.

That's about as clear as I can get it. I took that picture through a 10x magnifier. I don't know how else to get it any clearer. Can you tell the composition of material by looking at the coin or does it have to be weighed.

That's about as clear and zoomed in as I can get it without completely distorting the picture.

Thanks for the welcome everyone! I'm really jumping in hot and heavy to this coin hunting. It's really a thrill rush to me! Has anyone got an idea if this is a die gauge or just a deep regular wear gauge?
