Hi there, I am new to coin collecting (and this site), today I was going through some coins that I found in a box that I must have stashed away ages ago. I found this odd looking quarter and I was hoping someone could shed some light on it. I thought perhaps it was a wrong planchet strike on an American planchet because it has some copper colouring. I will try to post photos, I used my phone but if need be I'll pull out the DSLR . Thank you!

It's just a damaged, normal Canadian quarter. White Canadian coins post-2000 are made with Multi-ply-plated steel, meaning a steel planchet plated with nickel, then copper, then an outer nickel layer. In your coin, the outer nickel layer is damaged, exposing the copper plating inside. Looks like it's starting to corrode from the inside out too.

If you want to be extra sure, weigh it - Canadian quarters weigh 4.4g, while US ones weigh 5.67g.

Thanks for the replies! I was really thrown because the effigy side has a very thick rim (sorry, I know I'm not using the proper terms...I am really new to this!) I looked at it with my loupe which is why I was so stumped as well because I couldn't imagine how it could get damaged the way that it has been. It's neat none the less
