It looks like it has succumbed to zinc rot from split plating.

On copper-plated zinc cents like yours, it is not uncommon for the plating to split around devices when the coin is struck because of thin plating and/or a high-pressure strike. At first, it appears as a grey color (zinc) peeking out from the copper plating. Eventually the zinc will start to corrode (zinc rot) and create bubbles under the plating in those areas and will continue to spread until the coin is completely eaten away.

"Die rot" ...haha, I was half asleep. Not what I meant to write. Kinda funny, I dont have all the lingo down but I truly meant to write "zinc rot". Spruett001 knew what I meant. An thanks for the explanation an link. As far as die rot, not really sure what that is...

The reason why we mentioned zinc, is because of the gray color we see inside of the '8'. The plating gets split and the rot sets in. The beginning of the coin eventually. (faster if acid is applied to it. Then it is a copper Hershey's kiss wrapper.
