Quite a few dies failed in this same spot from what I've seen. I just looked the variety up on Cuds ON COINS and they have two listings for 1940-S, -01 and -02, but there are many more. I'm working on cataloging late die state 1940-s Mercury's and have found about a dozen different fractured obverse dies some of which extend rim to rim. Here's a shot of a 40-S where this crack has progressed into a fairly large die break. I think the San Francisco mint retired their obverse Mercury dime dies in 1940 when they fell out of the press in pieces.
