1942 Mercury Dime - Repunched Date, Machine Doubling Or Something Else?

This one has me a bit baffled. The date looks as if it has been repunched, yet it also looks as if it is just an optical illusion based on the last attached photo - the date seems to have a deeper cut on the sides, perhaps making it appear as doubling. The '2' and '4' digits are thicker than in the many other 1942 Mercury dimes I have. I'm not an expert on date doubling, so I'm seeking some assistance from members here. Thanks for any input!

Thanks! That is what I think it is too. The thickness of the last two digits is what throws me off.

The doubling is due to Die Deterioration.Late Die State.

It is possible the smashing of the 2 and BERTY was caused by old style coin roll crimpers, Sam circumferential damages.
