I am unable to find any information on identifying a genuine 5 florin coin from Aruba or not.
It is my understanding this very coin was commonly counterfeited. It was replaced by a round 5 florin coin in 2004 or 2005.
I just bought a square 5 florin coin issued in 1995 from the coin shop tonight. I would like to know if it is real or not. Internet does not turn up any reliable information that will help me.
Thank you for your help in advance on any helpful information you may have on this particular coin.

@carringa, a few pieces of information, plus good pics of your new coin would be helpful. Can you please tell us the weight, width, length, and thickness of your coin?

It does have a relatively low mintage (just over 200,000) but, is the second highest mintage (behind 1996) of the coin between 1995 and 2005 when it was replaced with the round version to possibly avoid confusion with the square 50 cent piece. From all I can find, it's a fairly low value coin.

It would be really helpful if you can upload a few pics so that we can see the coin. Both obverse and reverse please.
I haven't heard about this coin being an often counterfeited one, honestly.
Spruett: that's actually quite much given the population of Aruba.

You lucky bunny ! - I don't have this type. I am looking for one of these myself. I have a World type collection of 81 machine struck square coins, in all coinage metals, including gold. Almost all of them came from dealers' junk bins over about a 15 year period. It would be a complete set with about four more different types.

Hello to all who Replied, I honestly do not know how to take a good picture of coin myself. I tried many times but failed miserably. I have a lot of coins that I would love to sell on ebay but cannot because of the reason above. Oddly, it is easier to sell banknotes. If someone could kindly explain how to do it, I would be happy to post the photos for all of you to see. There is few sources on Internet stating that this coin was often counterfeit. I tried to find information on how to spot it but no information is out there in Internet. Even I could not find anything on the website of Aruban Central Bank? Yes, this coin has low mintage due to the small size of the population on Aruba which made sense. Happy that this post got some replies! Many thanks!

Quote: Spruett: that's actually quite much given the population of Aruba. From what I see, the Aruban population is close to half of that (half of 200,000). The U.S. mints coins in over a billion despite our population of less than 400 million and they aren't rare. Is there something I'm missing? The latest sold on ebay for $6: 222678391907And earlier for $3.50: 162637830126 Edit: I just saw your post, Carrigna. @ spruett001, thank you for the tutorial link! Will work on scanning the coin tomorrow. Hopefully, it will turn out very well. I always have a problem with taking photos (or pictures) of coins.
I got this coin for only $2. Not bad considering if I were to exchange this coin for USD, it would be worth $2.79. I think this coin is demonetised. Not sure.
I will try to e-mail the central bank and see what they have to tell us. I will keep all of you posted on this topic.
@ Ultrarant, I will upload photos tomorrow if all goes well!
I will weigh the coin on this Tuesday as I do not have a weight.

Hope you can see the images! I was able to crop the image of the first one, not the second image. Tomorrow I will weigh the coin. Should I take the coin out of the holder? To do the weighting? Please advise. Thank you for your help!

I finally got an opportunity to weigh this coin. It is 0.30 ounces or 8.5 grammes.
The measurement is simply 26 cm each side. (I take another measurement.)
Its thick is 2 mm. My eyes are not good but I think that is what the ruler is saying.
I am still waiting for the reply to my e-mail from Central Bank in Aruba.
Hope this information helps all of you?
Awaiting your replies or advices with much interest. Thank you for your help in advance.

Does that mean it is fake because of the weight which is not even correct?
I re-measure it and it is 26 mm--width, not the sides.
Umm....
It says it is magnetic. I will try that as well.

It is magnetic.
The weight bothers me. Now I am unable to return the coin to the dealer. :(
I took the coin out of the coin holder in order to weigh it.
Maybe postal scale is not ideal for weighing a coin?
