Hi everyone, I just picked up this Celtic drachm imitating the form of a coin of Alexander III. It is rather small at 16mm and 2 grams. However, I am not at all certain of the date. Any guesses?

While I find this piece fascinating, I know very little about celtic coinage. Any info about my coin or celtic Alexander III coins in general would be appreciated!

Here's a very similar example, dated roughly as 310 - 275 BC.

Bob L - Wow! Thanks! You are amazing at finding references on obscure ancients.

Also, do Celtic coins have much collector interest? It does seem like there are few listings and few buyers on auction websites. Honestly, I'm just amazed at how cheap these fascinating coins are.

Not my collecting area, but there is a popular niche for Celtics in the ancients market. Celtic imitations of Thasos tets and Macedonian issues seem to be particularly popular.

Nice to see one of this type here, not something we see very often. The detail on this coin is better than most. Congrats.

Nice pick up!

Celtic coins tend to carry a premium because the most historically affluent collectors (Western Europe) see "Celtic" and think "my ancestors!" In the time of Alexander's campaigns, the Celts were most active in eastern Europe, and their coinage mostly imitates Macedonian types. They were driven west by both the Scythians and the Seleucids, and merged with existing populations, mainly in Gaul/Iberia and the British Isles. Those later types are the ones that tend to carry the most premium.
