I just picked this up from my shop's bid board last week. The 1913-S has the second lowest mintage of the Barber dime series(not counting the 1894-S) at 510,000. It is a semi-key but there are several issues that are more valuable. This is a scanned image and my first scanned image at that so hopefully they are of good enough quality to grade.
It doesn't seem to meet some of the criteria for VG8 -- some letters in LIBERTY for instance. I would say G4 although the reverse might be better -- the scan of the reverse is a bit more difficult to make out.
Looks like a slam-dunk for G-04: head outlined with almost no detail remaining, and no trace of LIBERTY. The reverse might be a tad better but the obverse generally determines the overall grade.
This might be a good date to hoard. Considering the low mintage it might become more popular (and pricier) at some point. The 1901-S, 1903-S, and 1904-S all have higher mintage yet carry higher price tags. The 1913-S might just catch up one day!
I'm straining to see some letters in LIBERTY but just can't. So it can't grade VG.
This is such a good example that I pulled out my set to see if this one was a little better, as my set is mainly G4 coins. And like you said this is a one of the tougher dates. (and undervalued in my opinion).
