Found my first contemporary counterfeit today for 50 cents. It's a lead cast 1907 Barber half dollar. Pretty cool piece. Couple questions though, is it legal? Are they rare or collectible? Any thoughts are greatly appreciated thanks!

It's certainly not legal to counterfeit coins. It's okay to own, just don't try to spend it! Out of curiosity, how much does it weigh?

Quote: 12.179 grams Hmmm...I would expect it to be heavier if it were lead. That's underweight for a real silver Barber Half. Are you sure it's not just a heavily damaged original, maybe a cleaned dig find? Does it have any "silvery" ring to it?

Oh come on Spruett! That suckers a fake for sure, no good details. It may be lead and tin mixed, to get the color better.

If it's pure Lead you should be able to bend it with your fingers .

I found a counterfeit walker last year coin roll hunting, I had no clue it was fake til I did the ping test on it and was like huh that's weird. My business partner in coins was played too. I gave it to him since he uses them as educational tools.

I used to have one of those but gave it away. Now wish I'd have keep it. Mine too was an odd weight but then I had to remember there are massive amounts of different mixtures with Lead.

Likely a pot metal mix, exonumia dealers will generally sell these cast pieces for $3-$5. The OP's piece is about as crude a one as I've seen.
