I got this in change a while back. When the cashier handed it to me I glanced at it and thought it may be clipped. upon closer inspection I can see that it is more oblong than round as well as to much damage to be anything other than PMD. It's actually very interesting the way the metal has been pushed upward and inward. your thoughts?

Yep, a lot of PMD. How it happened specifically, I can't say.

It also looks like it was hit on both edges at the same time, or held with needle nose pliers and with one edge on an anvil or some other hard surface and hit really hard making it somewhat oblong.
I think that the "RICA" looks kinda cool. Kind of like the lettering on a 60's psychedelic concert poster except in black and white.
Rest in Peace

Probably right about the pliers, those digs on the face seem to be the groove indentions, then whacked with a hammer

I agree that the damage pattern is interesting, so keep saving it if you want. I think that it is only worth face value though.

Yep, it's bad PMD (Post Mint Damage). Worth face value. But you can keep it if you like.
