Another key date for me ! Another long empty space filled in the collection Until an uncirculated example comes along, I think this one will fill that hole nicely. I purchased this one at XF, I think it is a nice example for the grade. Any thoughts ? Thanks for all opinions ! Edited by InfiniteInterest 05/11/2008 3:40 pm

I lean towards XF-45, too. That blast on the cheek broke the camel's back for me. Still, an excellent example of a great coin. Jim

You guys are harsh graders! LOL Look at the reverse of this coin. There's virtually NO wear showing on the wheat grains, they are near MS quality. Also, ONE CENT UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, words are nearly hit free (as most of the reverse). This coin has seen very little circulation. Sadly, it took a big, hard hit to the obverse high point (cheek) at some point, but that should not be construed as excessive wear to the XF level. Additionally, the the obverse fields are extremely clean.

AU53-55 the fields are friction free and the wheat lines are not worn. that usually guarentees a 53 or higher. the mark on the face is distracting but the overall eye appeal is a huge plus. without the mark, it would grade a definite 55 and maybe as high as 58.

Yea, the lighting sure makes that cheek stand out ! As with the 1909-S in the other thread- this one has a nicer reverse...I also pegged the reverse much closer to AU, the left side being just a little weaker than the right.I do like the nice smooth fields, much the same as the 1909-S also ! I guess he could use a couple stitches in that gash to the cheek ... I like it as an XF-45 for sure.

Is that a scratch in the left side of the field, under "in", or just a hair/lint?

Lint there JohnAP...Always seems to be dust here ! I just never see it until I blow up the pics, and then I don't want to take them again.

Hey, Thad. Yup, grades are tough in my class. I would really like to see this coin in hand. I suspect that there is more wear in the hair than what you see at first blush. No doubt that the reverse is great, the obverse is what needs more consideration. I would never be afraid of 45 and AU is a possibilty, but not just from the pics, for me. Jim

I would say AU no problem. The reverse of this coin is almost perfect with just some very minor scratches. The stalks look great and there is no visible wear to them or the text. The obverse is almost the same condition except for the cheek and small mark by IN. Where this is a semi-key date I think this should be taken into consideration for this coin as well, depending on the grader they will mark it lower or higher because of the same exact reasons. This is a great coin and one to brag about, if you find an uncirculated one this would be great for the trade in to get it.
