I am looking to buy world banknotes on online auctions sites such as Heritage and LiveAuctioneers. What are your experiences with these sites in terms of reputability, item accuracy, and are raw banknotes checked for counterfeiting prior to being listed?
Rest in Peace

Heritage and Stacks are as perfect as humans could be.

Either of them are extremely helpful and honest to both their sellers and bidders.

I've had minor issues with both and the person who answered the phone took care of those difficulties within one minute and didn't have to hand me over to someone else.

In this day and age they exemplify what companies should be like.
Rest in Peace

Heritage and other reputable houses who deal in graded currency, most likely...but they still may make mistakes. Ungraded notes always carry a risk of course. Most of the higher "class" of auction house (those too rich for my blood such as Heritage) value their assessment abilities and strive hard to maintain the higher standards, its their lifeblood. ALWAY check return policies, ALWAYS!

I do what I call "secondary" online auctions. Usually the National local auction houses in a conglomerate venue, (grouped together for sales visibility). These can be risky, but they can be gems as well. I have seen both graded and raw US & World currencies that to my untrained eyes look genuine, the bids reflect a genuineness (or someone getting hosed?). But risky unless you know the currency game.

They generally have no return policy, but that doesn't matter if it's fake they'll still take it back. If you disagree with the grade though you're stuck with it

Be careful when using aggregator sites...

HA runs it's own auctions, so you are dealing with the 1st party.
Aggregators are accepting bids from you to place with the 1st party auctioneer. Bidding with a 2nd party like this may mean if your bid isn't accepted, tough.

Heritage and Live Auctioneers are two entirely different animals. Heritage is their own company, one of the largest on the planet, and Live Auctioneers is an aggregator who affiliates with other auction companies to provide them exposure they're too small to achieve on their own. So, it's not so much about trusting them as it is about trusting whatever company chose to hire Live Auctioneers to promote their sales.

Do you know who that company is? Me, neither.
