Hello All!
I thought everyone should know what they have done to me and beware! They really have no protection for buyers or sellers.

I sold a chunk of melted so called scrap gold on ebay for a friend who was going to to a buy/sell gold store. It sold for $2,200.00! The buyer messaged me stating that he was happy and would I be listing more. Then a month later he filed a dispute with ebay. The totality of his complaint said "receiveded empty box" yes receiveded!

I was not concerned as he had messaged me through ebay that he liked it and would I be selling more. I also replied to ebay... Who waits a month to claim they received an empty box? On a $2,200.00 purchase?

The bottom line is that ebay found in favor of the buyer! It wasn't until I filed a complaint with the BBB that ebay gave me my money back. The ebay rep who called stated that the person purchased with a credit card through paypal and that the CC company would have given the buyer his money back and taken the money from paypal. In other words ebay and paypal look out for themself!

On the flip side I purchased a cnc machine from banggood in China. It cost $330.00 free shipping. It arrived with parts missing that I bought locally. It took six hours to put it together. It didn't work! Incompatible with windows 10. Banggood knew that but it isn't stated in the listing. It cost be $92 to ship it back for a refund. Tracking stopped at the destination City in China. I filed a dispute with paypal and lost because I could not prove that it was delivered to banggood. I had continuous video packing and sealing the box then pics at the post office, customs forms and receipts. Paypal terms say that I have to prove that I shipped.

Buyer/Seller Beware!

Unless you ship overseas via ebay's own shipping you have nothing to prove delivery. Not even if its registered as the package "disappears" as soon as it enters the destination country.

The vast majority of the time delivery confirmation or signature confirmation is all you need to prove delivery. Ive never faced an empty box problem.

to the community!

I understand and sympathize with your situations and know you are frustrated.

You did the right thing by filing a complaint with the BBB.

Dealing in high dollar items like scrap gold is ripe for abuse. You also have to remember that not everyone is honest and there are bad buyers (and sellers) that can, and do, exploit holes in ebay and PayPal's rules.

Dealing internationally with high dollar items on ebay is a recipe for disaster.

Rule number one of online commerce is just avoid dealing with China directly and really most of Asia. It's just simply not worth the risk.

Depends on the country and how you ship. Many countries the tracking continues with priority or express mail. That said it has to be a country with a postal system that can be trusted

I agree completely! I would never buy anything from China again!

Actually I wish that I could buy/sell outside of ebay and not use paypal. They have grown to the point that they do what they want and only care about themselves.
Rest in Peace

You're a lot more trusting than I am if you would send $2k worth of gold to someone in China, via ebay or anybody else. Shudder, sorry for your experience.

But anyway -

PayPal's return requirement is more than proof of shipping....

"Comply with PayPal's shipping requests in a timely manner, if you're filing a Significantly Not as Described claim. PayPal may require you, at your expense, to ship the item back to the seller, to PayPal or to a third party (which will be specified by PayPal) and to provide proof of delivery."

Which is reason enough to never deal with them directly. Never deal with any country directly that doesn't have continued USPS tracking in country

When my website got dinged by the Google Penguin update I lost some of my first page rankings. I immediately worked to clean up my backlink profile. I had about 500 spammy web directory links pointing to my site. All the directories were owned by an SEO guy from India. I thought, great. They're all owned by the same person. I can just pay to have them removed in one shot. I contacted him and negotiated a bulk rate to have all the links removed. It was around $500. I paid him through paypal and he deleted the links. A few days later I noticed new links appearing from directories that looked like his. In all he added 600 new links to other directories that he controlled. I filed a dispute with paypal and I lost! They could do NOTHING for me. I learned my expensive lesson. Don't trust anyone from over seas and don't use paypal if you have the funds directly transferred from your bank account. Always use a credit card!

That's not true at all. I had a customer file a snad because he did not want to pay to have a calibration done. When I told him to ship it back for a refund he called ebay and escalated it. Paypal took it out of my account right away, and PAID IT TO HIM WHEN HE PROVIDED TRACKING. NOT when it was received, but when he shipped it. As it was I got an empty box back and ebay took his side. My first, last and only return in 10 years. Thenthen took a final value fee from my account.

I have not sold on ebay since. They lost way more on my post incident sales than they did by messing with me on this transaction. But if they file a snad, you are screwed.
