I found this interesting Quarter on ebay and it has the strangest doubling I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure it's MD, but it's still interesting. I am not buying this, just happened to scroll to this coin while looking at error coins on ebay. Here's the link for the quarter. https://www.ebay.com/itm/2017-D-Qua...AOSwPAxaEc71

I don't think it is a doubled die at all. It's something but I suspect it's struck through something or other, or die chips, maybe even damage.

I doubt it's Machine Doubling; nothing about those artifacts resemble the adjacent number. I think it's die damage of some sort. The "features" seem to all resemble a hit with metal gouged into and pushed up from the die. Something like that could happen if you drop a die at the right time and place.

Some images look like contact marks from the rim of another quarter.
Other images look like some die damage.

Thank you Buddy and sSuperDdave. I agree with you SsuperDdave that it's Die Damage of some sort. It's still interesting to look at because of how unsual it is. I thought it was possibly MD because of how common it is on ATB Quarters.

Keep in mind, though, Machine Doubling is a totally deceiving name for the process because nothing happens twice during it. MD will always resemble the feature it's connected to, and it will always be connected, because it all happens during one stroke of the die.

"Smearing" is a far more accurate term for MD.

Just don't buy it for $40 like that shield Cent MD

And that sure don't look like "smearing".

Mark, I won't let that happen ever again. That was probably the biggest mistake I've ever made. I am laughing about it now. I have no plans on buying this Quarter anyway. SsuperDdave, thank you for elaborating on MD and how it happens. That was very helpful to me.

It is coin damage. The devices are incuse. The field is damaged in that area of the band where the incuse devices are. The damaged area does not represent any part of the hubbing. Worth. 25 cents.

Thank you Coop for that explanation. I was very skeptical on this coin because something very simple could of caused this to happen. P.S. I didn't buy this coin and I didn't want to buy it.
