The question of acetone safety was discussed recently in another topic and I wanted to provide some basic precautions for consideration. I thought it should be in a distinct thread. Here is the CDC safety bulletin for acetone: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/ipcsneng/neng0087.htmlKeep in mind that you should avoid using acetone in an enclosed area without proper air flow. Avoid ignition sources such as flames, cigarettes, etc. While acetone is not classified as a carcinogen itself, it is a permeator, which means that it can transport other things into the body. For example, whatever was removed from the surface of your coin can be introduced into the body because it's in the acetone and the acetone enters through the skin. I'm not a health expert, just a chemist. If you have specific health questions we can try to get answers as a community. Be safe. Thanks Bump111 for the Acetone info and link. Although not a health concern, acetone will damage the finish on most furniture, and on some counter top surfaces. I put lots of newspaper or paper towels on my table before using acetone in case of a spill. Also, you don't need much, and small amount in the bottom of a glass bowl does the trick or if the coin is small enough, a shot glass works well. You can put a little aluminum foil or a piece of paper over the bowl to slow the evaporation process.

Story from an old timer at work is that it will cure athlete's foot if you soak your feet in it briefly...

With the amount of time my wife spends at the nail salon, having her nails repainted, she should either be dead or a mutant by now. The place wreaks of acetone and she often brings the stench home with her.

Quote: I put lots of newspaper or paper towels on my table before using acetone in case of a spill This does not seem like an adequate protection for whatever is under the newspaper or paper towels because both are paper and acetone can soak right through paper. I never use acetone in the house. I have several locations outside of my house that are adequate and I don't have to worry about vapors, exposure to flame or damaging anything if I spill anything.

Thanks for posting this, Bump! The "permeator" info is interesting and good to know.

Whenever I use acetone I go down to my garage area into the storage section, I keep the door open and in the case when it is warm out I open the garage door to allow further ventilation. I keep my acetone, ms70, and ez est in the basement. If I spill any of it the concrete floor will take the hit and not the laminate flooring, and other stuff inside the actual house.
