Hi. These photos are of a morgan with a horizontal projection to the west of the upper part of the 1 in the date. I know there is a VAM with a horizontal line in the upper loop of the 6 but not sure about this find. Thanks Rich *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

it is the short line just under the upper west part of the 1. Just under it. It is clear from the coins I have found with it that it is a die issue, imo.

Is it dust? If it is raised from the surface, then it might be a die gouge. But the color reminds me that is is probably just something on the coin?

it is raised and it is on 3 different coins of the same year. Let me see if I can get a better shot.

Interesting. If the same feature is on three different examples, it's likely in the die. Now, is it a die scratch or a repunched date?

Sorry it took so long but here are a few new photos of these coins with the horizontal line near the top of the one in the date.

That sort of "bar" is a known doubled 1 on a couple other Morgans, but not 1896 I don't think. I gotta PM a couple other people to have a look.

Thanks Dave and I agree. Learning about the VAMs is a course all in of itself.

Ah. In typical fashion, I managed to go through all the 1886 VAMs without seeing that.
