Hello, my Chinese great-grandpa left me this coin. From the front it looks like a silver Meiji Year 28 coin, but the back has marking stamped into it. Any idea what the characters mean? Any idea what this coin might be worth? Thank you!

Think those are assayer counter stamps, certifying coin is what it is. Others may be able to tell you just which "chop mark" is which.

They're chopmarks - punched onto coins by merchants to validate weight, authenticity and silver content.

Ah, I see. Thank you! Do they affect the value of the coin?

I think that, in general, chop marks can decrease the value of the coin as they have been added to the coin after it left the mint. I'm sure that there are some people somewhere who collect chop marks, but I think that they are overshadowed by the folks that prefer to have clean fields on their coins.

The only other thing that I would add is that the presence of chop marks does not guarantee that the underlying coin is real. Just as there are folks who are counterfeiting coins, some enterprising folks are adding chop marks to these fakes. I'm not saying that your coins is fake, though. I like that some of the chop marks on your coin seem to have been worn a little as if by circulation and then others were layered on top.

The chop marks, if real, would not affect the value of this coin since it was not high grade. it might increase the value a bit.

But, since it came from your great Grandfather, it is priceless.
