Hey guys, how would you grade this coin? Most of them are gradet 55,58 or 61. In the last month I had several examples in my Hand, but I liked this one the most. The condition is certainly not perfect, but much better than an average coin on german market. Greetings from Germany!

No wear, but softer strike. Fields reasonably clean. Some minor hits.

I can understand why AU58 to MS61 given, but I still think
MS62.

Need to examine the high points of the design (moustache, hair etc.), for mint lustre or wear, with a high powered loupe, to confirm.

Thank you for the answer! You are right about the weak strike. I am also in a german numismatic platform and there is only one collector who owns a coin from 1911 with full details. I also own an Ernst Ludwig that is (maybe wrong) in an NGC MS 61 slab, but this one here has a better luster (especially in the hair and at the cheekbone). People only paid for 3 years with this type of coin (1911 to 1914)but it is almost impossible to find an attractive example.
NGC gradet 4 as AU 58, 7 as MS 61, 4 as MS 62 and 2 as MS 63 and 1 as MS 64 (I saw this coin at HA and it is very scretchy )
PCGS gradet 5 as AU 58, 4 as MS 61, 1 as MS 62 and 2 as MS 63

Are there further opinions?

I think AU58 isn't a bad grade for this coin; I just can't seem to justify MS with all that flatness in the hair and those deep distracting scratches on the cheek/cheek bone.

Do you speak of the first or of the secound coin? I find the free one is better than the one in slab (which was gradet ms 61 although it has a loss of detail by harm). The 2nd one has much more mint luster (even at the hair) and better fields. On the other hand it has scratches, what is normal for this type. German mint law allowed the delivery in rolls and in bags. It seams that Hessen always ordered in bags from the mint in Berlin which made the typical goldcoin with Wilhelm II as well.

I was speaking of the original. I agree the second appears more flat but it doesn't exhibit as many distracting bag marks. Secondly, grading pics is just that, grading pics. Luster and eye appeal do matter when moving a coin a grade or two. Separately, I wouldn't' have graded the second as MS61 tho I can see an argument for MS60. To me both samples are AU and it doesn't matter what someone at NGC or PCGS things. My 2 cents.
