So I wasn't planning on buying a Seated dollar but this on popped up on my "you may be interested in" area on my ebay page. If I see a coin with its original dirt I give it preference even if it has a few minor issues. These are the sellers pics. Red arrows point to areas I have some concern with (will the dirt come off/are the rim issues bad?). Green arrows show issues I'm not concerned about. So I paid 359.99 and I'm sure some of you saw this on ebay (especially MikeF) but passed. I do plan on giving it an acetone bath and a possible send out to PCGS. The price I thought was good. We'll see when it gets here. Thanks for any and all comments! And this is my 1st Seated $ in over 20 years.

Grime issues are considerable, and efforts to remove them may, I fear, yield inconsistent coloring patches beneath. Reverse has some rim problems as well. I personally would not have bought this, but many of us understand your remarkable success in unearthing gems, so I wish you well and hope you will keep us up to date.

Well you're pointing out the right areas for possible issues but I do like the natural toning on this one. You'll just have to look at it in hand to determine if the black areas eat into the patina. If it is just dirt, I wouldn't remove it but it sounds like you have good knowledge on how to preserve a coin. Some areas like the toe and the talons are a little blurry but I would say it's a solid xf-45 if it grades straight. I'm too chicken to buy raw slds so no, I didn't see this one.

The pics are probably bringing out the concerns. Seems like a nice and original XF Seated dollar at a great price.

Looks about xf40 to me. Obverse is stronger than the reverse. Surprised that you were able to pick it up for this price. Seller described it as Fine+ and seems to be a jewelry store that doesn't know what they are doing. The issues that you are concerned about could only be verified by examination in hand. It looks like a great buy for this coin even if you won't make a 50,000% return on it. Best of luck!

Looks like strong XF-45 details there, almost AU territory. Yes it has some possible environmental damage but appears to be a deal at the price paid.

This is a coin I'd seriously contemplate bypassing the acetone bath with (and mind, I normally advocate bathing every raw coin you buy). The determination must be made in-hand whether what's on the coin is actually grime, or if it's some manifestation of carbon or the natural toning process. If it's grime, doing anything which will remove that grime has to be carefully considered because the result will likely be a coin whose dark/light contrast areas have inverted - the formerly-grime covered places will now look cleaned and the rest of the coin will be dark by comparison. This is a "natural" look, if a bit dirty, but removing the dirt will likely mean the coin never looks "natural" again.
One exception is that green dot on the wing. That must be investigated and treated, even if in the most local fashion with a hawthorn.
On first impression, I wouldn't touch this coin otherwise.
