Any thoughts on what caused this to happen on the reverse at the united/one cent letters and near the memorial? What is the terminology? Thanks.

Your coin was struck in a VLDS (Very Late Die State). Heavy Die Deterioration and Die Flow lines show as it was pushing outwards. The die was very worn and close to retirement when your coin was struck. No extra value for this.

STATES OF is a Grease Fill, I'm grabbing a box of popcorn for that other on ONE. There is definitely a striking error there, but what? Planchet plating fault or impacted die/collar clash. If the die were to have struck the collar on the edge it could have caused a separation along device lines as this.

Don't think this is a die attrition problem, if it were the portions closet to the rim would have moved.

Thanks Errers and Varietys for educating me. I wasn't sure what caused this condition.

You're welcome. When you see this on a coin, it's because it's in a VLDS from striking many coins. I see this all the time coin roll hunting. This was very common in the 1980's.

Personally, I think it is Die Deterioration as E&V said. I'm not seeing die attrition.

The obverse also shows Die Deterioration on "IN GOD WE" running down through the L in LIBERTY along the rim.

I wonder what @coop will say to break this impasse!

Just got a reply from Coop:

Quote:
It is a combination of VLDS and extreme die polishing. Kind of the worst of both.
