Hi all, want to know if the toning is natural or has the coin been chemically altered ?

Looks like pretty mild toning. I would say this one is natural. Nice coin by the way!

That's a nice looking 1914 (year 3) yen, great detail. As presented in your pictures, I think the tone is quite fine. To use a term I learned from here recently, this looks like "market acceptable" toning. Very lovely example.

Thanks guys, personally I prefer light subtle toning as compared to dark patchy ones. This one reminds me of a thin layer of oil shimmering on the surface of a crystal lake.

Hard to tell but I know I have something similar that's in a Dansco album.

Here's one of mine. 1895

Here in Japan, they don't like the chop marks so much, so you can find them a bit cheaper.

What attracted me was the toning. A lot on the dragon side. Just a tiny bit on the rising sun side, and you can still see some of the original UNC luster where the chop mark on the other side create dents on this side that protected the luster.

Numister:
It still has it's mint luster,
The toning is quite light, so for me at least,
I wouldn't really care if the toning is natural or artificial.

It would be almost impossible to give a conclusive answer re toning natural or artificial in this case, and so I have no trouble at all in accepting this coin just as it is, and totally disregarding any doubt that I may have.

No loss in potential value at all, despite any doubt.
It just happens to be a very nice coin.
