I've become more and more interested in the coinage of Elymais over the past six months. When this appeared in the Numismall sale I couldn't resist. It was reduced from $60 to $20 then had an extra 10 % off.

I'd never even seen one in the flesh before. King Ordes Elymian tetradrachm, mid 1st century AD, 28 mm

Wow, great deal! An Elymaean tetradrachm, with no BD, a rare type, for $20 (less the discount). Well done!

Using the most current research on the series - P.A. Van't Haaff's Catalogue of Elymaean Coinage - the attribution is:

Orodes III
2nd century AD
Van't Haaff 16.3.1-2.a

Looking at your coin enlarged, FlaviusJ, and allowing for die wear, wear to the coin itself, vagaries of time, and differences in photography, I wonder if perhaps yours and mine are of the same obverse die. We may be coin brethren! Certainly some of the beard details, and the curving diadem band trailing down behind the tiara - with the band's "arrowhead" shape emerging from the ear, as well as some of the remaining legend on yours, do all look similar to mine.

There were only so many of these Orodes III tets issued - and only a very finite number of dies with the single crossbar on the anchor.

I fell in love with those ugly little beasts, but I've never snatched one for that price. Congratulations.

It's hard to even find Elymaean drachms under $20 these days. Nice grab!

A good pick up and yes Elymais head of publicity Bob got me interested enough to pick up a drachm myself. I've yet to see a tet at that price though.
