I just picked up this very interesting copper kasu of the Madurai Nayak Dynasty (modern day Tamil Nadu in southern India).

The obverse is a bull facing right, and the reverse is a stylized image of the ruler.

However, I really can neither identify under which ruler this coin was minted nor determine the span of dates when this piece was minted. Any help would be appreciated!

Bob L- While mine is 16mm and nearly 3 grams, your suggestion looks pretty close. Thanks!
Although I had a feeling that it was unusual, I had no idea that this coin was scarce.

I wouldn't necessarily call this one scarce; these are a resonably regular (usually about one a month) offering from the India-based ebay stores I watch.

Drnsreedhar has some literature on these coins; the experts are pretty deeply divided over which kingdom made them, or even whether they hail from closer to the Chola dynasty proper (ca. 13th century) or even as late as the early 17th century.

You have a fantastic specimen though; much better shape than either of mine!
