Boy David, you hit that nail right on the head! Great job of pointing that out! Using the basic overlays, you can tell it wouldn't necessarily be a clash, not lining up right.

Crazyb0, I knew this because I read a article about a recurring Sunken Die error and this came up. 1973 D LMC's are notorious for this. It's a good example and a keeper. :)

Thank you Mark. Keep your eyes out for this error. This error is often mistaken for a Die Clash.

I am actually now keeping my eyes out for this one too. I remember finding one, but it was too beatup and threw it back in the spending pile. I want to find a example in decent shape. :)

Thanks E & V for the that information and the link. Interesting read. Sorry for the slow response I had to work today. Now I know what to do with the other two I found with it. 1973 D with a Recurring die subsidence error. Do you think these are from the same die at different stages or three different dies?

http://goccf.com/t/301826It's not a die clash. It's a mysterious form of die failure. Here is mine, just learned about this recently. I suggest you look at all the comments especially by Coop

You're welcome. It's a very interesting form of Die Failure and the crazy and unsolved puzzle remains a true mystery.

I think perhaps it was improper temperature due to faulty equipment. I can see how several dies could receive the same improper temperature and experience the same result. Just my opinion of course. I can't imagine any other way.

Coinmasters, yes they put a bunch of the dies in a kiln to temper, so if any of that group have the similar effect happen it seems reasonalble for many dies. For the question are these from the same die, possible not, you have to take all factors into account including die pairs and other standard impressions too. A nice study to do if you have multiple examples.
