I know what that is. That's a Peeled Lamination error. It worth a good premium because of its size. Great find. :)

I'm guessing this is PMD (post mint damage) based on the nice orange color inside the disturbed area. Just my opinion, I'll wait for the experts to chime in.

A surprising number of the larger lamination errors show bright orange copper color on the peeled area. I honestly have never figured out why.

Very nice find
Rest in Peace

Just a broken off piece of the lam from being in circulation. It left the mint complete, came off later. Big lam!

Thanks for the info, I can say I have never seen anything like this before. Almost looks like someone placed a patch over the area.

Here is one I found a while back:

1963-Lincoln-Penny-Error!-What-Is-This?

Quote:
Peeling of any part of the surface of a planchet causes what is know as a lamination error. The laminated part of the coin may be very small or run completely across the surface of the coin. Sometimes, the laminated layer will fall away and be completely missing, other times it can be folded back across the surface of the coin.

There are several more images of lamination errors on this page: http://Lincolncentsonline.com/laminations.html

I always save them back when I come across one.

Doesn't look like it came off. Like David said, it peeled an looks to have rolled up under itself
