I have this 1972 lincoln, the date looks doubled on the 72 and it looks like Mechanical Doubling on the 19. is it one or the other or Die Deterioration.

IMO Machine / Strike Doubling. The doubling is not consistent like a DDO would be and the most evident doubling is on the 2 but notice how the doubling wraps around the entire 2, not just the lower right? I've begun to associate this phenomenon with Machine Doubling. It also looks like it could be a bit of Die Deterioration Doubling.

Note the post count - I'm no expert, but I'm curious to know how well I judged it.

My thoughts are MD. However, some of what I see on the "2" looks a little like ejection doubling. There seems to be some scoop effect.

First things first: eject doubling IS Machine Doubling. Separating them is of no value because neither have any value.

Second thing: Markers cannot help determine whether you have a doubled die or Machine Doubling. Only the attributes of the doubling itself will help with that, and is the only area that requires attention. Markers are ONLY used to determine which doubled die you have once you have successfully determined that you indeed have a doubled die.

So...this is not eject doubling, and it is not a doubled die. It's simple Machine Doubling, and no marker is going to tell you that. The fact that the doubling is flat, shelf-like, takes up the normal thickness of the letters, and simply doesn't LOOK like a doubled die are the only things that matter here.

Chuck, SORRY, guess I was not as CLEAR as I should have been. I UNDERSTAND that EJECTION DOUBLING is MD. My point was, that to my eye, the "2" seemed to LOOK a little like EJECTION DOUBLING. I did not MEAN to SUGGEST that this was some sort of DOUBLED DIE. Thanks for clearing that up.
