AU50 sharpness but retoned over a dip, no luster to speak of. Not nearly as nice as the coins you usually post for us to drool over.

55. I see no indication of cleaning. The halo effect in this case, in all the hidden details area, are simply different because they had no touch from fingers.
I love this color. I'm also glad to see the few areas showing rub are not outstanding from the rest of the background.
Luster has no effect in changing a technical grade. Luster is very helpful in segregating high AU from low MS coins, and luster certainly helps the eye appeal, and therefore the value. But it doesn't affect the number.

EF-45, but it certainly has an AU grade. I'll wager the TPG said AU-53. These are overgraded in the AU range.

This statement is unequivocally false and should not be propagated anywhere. All accepted grading standards, including official standards established by the American Numismatic Association, specify luster requirements for grading Almost Uncirculated and Mint State coins.

I agree with BH1964 on luster requirements.  As I recall a strictly-graded AU-50 coin should retain half it's original luster, with more luster required for the higher AU levels. Of course, it seems obvious that TPGs in general are waiving this standard nowadays as they liberally award AU grades for coins with little to no luster.  I'd call this Trade dollar EF-40 with a shot at EF-45, straight grade.

This one is graded au-55. Very difficult to find good looking Trade dollars but this one caught my eye.
