Picked a second 1809 Half Cent for $70 thinking it made VF and was problem free. The first set of pics is from the seller. The second more colorful set was digitally manipulated by me to get a better sense of the surfaces. As always, would appreciate your thoughts on grade and problems. Thanks!

Obv scratched through T/Y, star 3 to lips, and below eye, but I think that in hand those scratches are probably much less prominent. Deeper scratch at S13 obverse and on reverse a hit on N in CENT, below bow, and at T in UNITED. I do not think they warrant a details grade. I would grade it VF20-VF25 TPG. This is a late die state with lots of crumbling around the denticles, although you can see that it was still a solid strike from those worn dies. Soak it in Verdi-Care for awhile and see what happens. If it's still too light, stick it in olive oil for a few months.

Thanks, your comments are very helpful and spot on. When I saw the mark from S3 to lips, it looked raised to me so I thought die crack instead of scratch. Does to look raised or incuse to folks?

Almost looks like someone etched a pair of glasses on liberty.

1809 is, by far, the easiest date to find in that VF or better grade. Nothing wrong with that if you can find a nice one at a good price.

You usually come up with some great coins at great prices, but I think this one is an unhappy exception.

This coin just has way too many small individual problems and $70 is heavy.

Not a fan of the scratches. But I bet in hand you would barely be able to see them. VF-25 Like the color though.

Could be a die scratch but I'd have to go look at Cohen & Manley to see if any 1809 varieties have known die scratches there.

VF-25, and if the seller's pics are accurate, it looks problem-free. The minor scratches are not very noticeable, and that longer one does look like a die scratch, although it will be easier to tell in hand.

Your 1809 looks like a Cohen 3 variety.

I think the marks on the obverse are scratches. I don't believe the Cohen 3 has any die cracks or die scratches at those locations. It's still a nice looking Half Cent.
