Cory, massive Die Deterioration is cause of that, read about it here::

The die that struck your coin was in its last striking moments. I refer to this as VLDS. (Very-Late-Die-State) Also it appears from the images of the obverse, it also suffers from coin damage. Pretty much a spender.
