Found this in some in some pocket change. Possible cause?

Possibly the die was damaged, making a mark an incuse mark on the die leaving a connecting line on the coins struck with that die.

It's a stress die crack just beginning to form around the rim. Note the crack from rim to top of inside right U. This will eventually extend across the tops of all the letters if it remained in use. Can't tell how far along the letters it may go, may see the other end of crack forming.
