Very interesting coin. I'm still learning about these errors, but I would have thought that since the lamination has come off the surface of the coin, all of the design elements in its path would have been more equally affected (e.g. compare the 9 in the date vs. the S in TRUST).

Laminations tend to run in a straight line. They can vary in thickness. Depending how deep the area is peeling. My theory on these is that when blanks are run though the setup mill creating the planchette with the proto-rim, this will loosen any laminations on the stock material. Sometimes these fall of the planchette before or after they're struck.

That's my theory, but I've not heard it confirmed by others yet.
