I have enjoyed collecting Franklin half dollars, and have wanted the Medal John Sinnock designed for the mint in 1932 or 1933 which was the design used for the obverse of the Franklin half. I found this example which had some additional engraving on the obverse S.P.A. 1950. I bought the medal and later found a convention program from the SPA convention in 1950 which was held in Philadelphia, hoping there might be some reference to the medal I ordered the book sight unseen. I was pleasantly surprised to find the attached article about the origins of these engraved medals. Thought I would share the information with this group.

That is an awesome medal dcas55
Great article on its history!
You should post it on TNG's token and medal thread.

I am glad I found this. My first thought would have been awwwww ... that's too bad it has graffiti but that article really makes it a special medal. Big fan of that medal myself with or without the SPA 1950 engraved on it.

I am going to post over there Toot and place a link pointing to dcas55's thread.

Thank you Tootallious, TNG you're right when I first saw the medal I contacted the seller and commented that because of the additional engraving I may not be interested but we came to an agreement on a price and because I wanted this medal I bought it. Sometime after that I found out about the Society of Philatelic Americans (SPA) meeting in Philadelphia in 1950 so I put 2+2 together and was very fortunate to find the conference program, you can imagine I was thrilled when I saw that story about the medal. I'm not a stamp guy but I went to a local stamp show to see if someone might know how many classes were involved in stamp shows since these medal were awarded to the first choice in every class I was hoping to determine how many of these medals might have had the additional engraving. No definitive answer from those I asked, after all the stamp show was 67 years ago. This experience goes to show how a hobby like coin collecting can lead down some interesting paths.
Thanks
dcas

What an absolutely enjoyable journey you have shared. I'm not sure that a Franklin connoisseur could possibly read this and NOT put it on their want list.

Excellent historical presentation. Thank you.

Am I correct in understanding that the end of page 725 begins with a description of the main medals made by J.R. Sinnock? Could you place the next page?

@WHC: Here's a link to a partial list of works by J. R. Sinnock from the Newman Numismatic Portal at Washington University in St. Louis:
https://nnp.wustl.edu/Library/PersonDetail/1791

An article by Dick Johnson published August 15, 2011, in his "MedalBlog" includes an additional listing of works executed by Sinnock: Article link is here:
https://medalblog.wordpress.com/201...llic-art-co/
and includes information on Sinnock, Gilroy Roberts, and Frank Gasparro.

Hope this helps.

Thank you. These sources are known to me. I'm looking for information about Gridiron Club Dinner Medal (1919).
