DC today, I believe, is rectangular on three sides, with the west side (bordering Virginia) following the irregular course of the Potomac.

Found some interesting information out from the eBayer Nathan about the Adam J. Cool pressed LMCs I've been posting. This quote was taken from a copy of an auction listing that Nathan had shared with me. Quote:
First the coin is pre-elongated or flattened and second the design is struck. The coin is not rolled simultaneously with the die design. The coin is first rolled through a rolling mill to a desired elongation, leaving the surface of the coin smooth and blank. The elongated blank is then transferred to a 60 ton pressure hydraulic press which has the engraved die attached. The blank is struck only once to produce a finished design. Thus, with the die being flat and pre-elongated coin also being flat, the process of striking the coin is in no way related to the method of the "rolled" out elongateds. The producer of these designs, Mr. Adam J. Cool, is the only professional engraver who is associated with the elongated hobby and does dimensional hand engraving. The options on Adam J. Cool's list of engraved dies he made for birds was: Grouse, Quail, Woodcock, Duck (small), Duck (large), Eagle, Pheasant, Turkey, Goose (small), Goose (large), Dove, Two ducks, and Penguin. I'm torn between grouse or dove on this one. I'm going grouse. What do y'all think?  |

 I've been reading that Adam J. Cool did dies for many elongated cents, miniature coins, die struck tie tacs and clips, and a Disney punch-out. He also was a die engraver who made most of the Wacks counterstamp dies. From 1976 through 1984, Mel Wacks designed and counterstamped more than 10,000 coins for more than 20 occasions including the Los Angeles Olympics, President Reagan's Inauguration, Freedom for the American Hostages, Pope John Paul II's visits to Mexico and the USA, and more. Wow. Thank you datadragon. Fantastic information about him. I had read about a little bit of what you posted but not the majority of it. He was definitely a very talented engraver.
