Cool old counter stamp on a 1920 LWC. There is HOPE on the obverse and 514 with the numbers facing different directions on the reverse... Two modern counterparts...

That looks more like an asterisk * than a star, chafemasterj

That's true Hondo. I've been thinking about it and it also looks a lot like a Torx bit. I'll have to see if one fits. Maybe it's a new counter stamp on an old coin.

I run across the artificial aging of counter stamps from time to time. There is one ebay seller that makes my skin crawl whenever I see several of his listings in a row. Right now he has 16 similar Masonic stamps on various dated LWCs. Here is a link to one of them... https://www.ebay.com/itm/235093591431Don't know how he gets away with presenting these as 'Rare WW II' collectibles. I did purchase one just to have as an example... Edit: Well, thought I purchased one but I just went through both of my Masonic books and I don't see it. Maybe I was going to get one but just couldn't pull the trigger. It doesn't appear that I took a picture of it. It's not in 'my previous uploads'. I'll have to find it and post a picture.

Chafe, I believe that isn't HOPE 514 above. I would suggest that the counter-stamp's meaning is the Bible passage in Wisdom 5:14, pertaining to Hope.
It seems particularly relevant because the false hope of earthly things is carried away like a guest that stays only a day. Just like a cent, the lowest value coin.

My first thought was also Torx.

Nice decoding Brandmeister. I love when a counter stamp has a deeper than surface meaning. Thanks!
