As this community´s motto is Education, I will try to educate the ones, which still wonder how can they make a difference between a genuine silver 5 gulden (1923) coin of Danzig and a forgery.

The first difference is the material, the fake coin here is not made of silver, the good one is made of silver, but that is not the point I am trying to explain here.

It is all in the details, which I would like to show here:

Here are the edges of two fake coins:

Here is the edge of the genuine (certified) 5 Gulden coin:

Here is a photograph of two fake coins (the larger ones), which were mixed with genuine small-denomination coins and sold as a package by an unprofessional in numismatics entity:

I hope, that everybody can spot the differences for themselves and keep away from such pieces.

All information shown above is given by me in this forum is just a suggestion and without obligations on my side.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

@coinworldtv, thanks for posting this. From the edge view pic, it looks like the fakes come in a variety of diameters, perhaps to match the correct weight. Can you please post the correct diameter and weight of the real Danzig 5 Gulden?

Excellent comparison and there are enough differences to tell one from the other. When I collected world I never obtained one because of the well known flood of fakes.

If I had seen your photos I might have tried harder. Thank you.

Yes, these fakes are good, but only on a low-resolution photograph.

I do not have the pieces in my hands as they were purchased by a client of mine, who has probably already returned them (as recommended by me).

The 2nd piece was a 5 gulden coin, dated 1932, which is also smaller in diameter as original too.

When it comes to Danzig coins, especially the higher denominations starting at 2 Gulden, I'd probably only buy from experienced and reputable dealers. There are far too many counterfeits of Danzig coins out there ...
