Before I contact the sponsors of the larger coin shows (Whitman Expo, Long Beach, Annual Fun Show, etc..) I wanted to run this question past you guys first.

I'm looking for "one" specific coin, date and condition range.

Over the past year I have checked LCS's, Local Shows, ebay and Heritage.

I'm planning on taking a few vacations during the upcoming year and attend a few of the county's larger shows. Is there a mechanism (one-stop-shop) in place to identify the vendors that have this coin without walking around in circles for hours from table-to-table?

Sounds like you need to find a dealer that services want lists.

Even if such a service existed and you found a dealer who had that coin today, there would be no guarantee that they would still have that coin on the day of the show, or even have that coin at the show. I agree you're better off looking for a dealer to find that coin for you -- they're likely to be better connected and find it, rather than you trying to find it on the open market, where other dealers may have already picked it up for themselves or other interested buyers.

It would be helpful to know the coin, as that would certainly give us a better idea for potential locations to recommend.

There are dealers, many listed into the Numismatist, that do specific want list searches.

I would follow the suggestions of the above posts.

Just curious, what coin are you looking for?

Surely hunting down the coin you really want is part of the enjoyment.
I go with an open mind to coin fairs and invariably find some nice pieces which probably weren't on my radar.
Just my opinion but I wouldn't want someone to find my coins.I have eyes, ears, books, forums and of course the internet.

Great feedback gents. All your points are well taken, thank you!

I was just thinking that there might be some type of system in place to track-down the coin prior to attends the shows. Like I said, walking around for hours from table to table, waiting "on-line" to talk to the vendors and asking the same stinkin question over and over again, seems to be counter productive and a major waste of time. If I knew who had that coin, I would head straight for that table.

I was thinking the shows sponsor could (or would) distribute my e-mail/request to all the vendors. If any of them had what I was looking for, they would contact me. Or maybe there would be a tool on the sponsor's website, to submit requests/want lists. I guess it was just wishful thinking on my part. Yes peter1234, it's the thrill of the hunt.

The coin in question: 1932-D Washington quarter, MS60-61 range. I know they're out there. I'm being picky, this is a large dollar amount for me. I need to see the coin in-hand.

I never thought or knew about dealers that service want lists. I should probably look into that!

I'm wondering if I'm thinking of this process the wrong way.

Choose a 58 or a 63 for your optimal grades. 58 will often look better than a 60-62.

There are scores of dealers who have them and offer money back refunds upon return.

Any larger show will have 32-D's.

You know, I've been thinking the same thing. I think you're right! I have seen many 58's over the past six months that in my opinion (with my novice/non-professional eyes) really look outstanding!

I'll do that! Thank you!

This coin should be reasonably easy to find in high AU grades. I picked up a 55 just a couple months ago. Just curious, you plan to attend a couple of the countries largest coin shows, why wouldn't you spend some time looking around? I would feel like I was at the pearly gates walking into either of the coin shows you mentioned.

The closet you will find for that is looking up the dealers that will be there and checking their websites.

Your best bet will be to just make an email with what you want and send it out to all of them and see what responses you get back.

I'd honestly strongly consider a 58 over a 60/61 or saving a little more for a 62/63. Unless there is a particular reason for the 60/61 range that's a range most people stay away from now a days.

There is a service that tracks dealers at major shows, but /a/ I don't remember the name and /b/ it's self selected, so only dealers that want to bother listing their inventory do so.

It's independent and has nothing to do with the sponsors.

I think your wasting time and money. My method is to go to small coin shows and sort of ask around for dealers that frequent the same shows. Also, a dealer that does traveling around to other coin shows. I do this and have found several dealers that do travel around to shows in other states. I ask them to look for certain coins for me and they usually do. One dealer I see at many shows makes a list of wants for people and has found some great coins for me at really decent prices. As long as they are traveling around from show to show and since it's their business, I just let them do the searching for me. The main thing is you have to be able to talk to them. To many people just don't want to spend time talking to dealers.

Yes, what your asking about is very similar to Collectorscorner.com It is run by the parent company of PCGS and most of the top dealers post their inventory there. There are 9 Washington 1932-D quarters in the MS61-62 range, none in MS-60 but I would discourage you from that grade as it would probably be a coin with problems. At least one of the 61's is a CAC stickered coin which is what you should strive to collect at this range.

You can also check out PCGS CoinFacts. They list the coins posted on the collectors corner website for the applicable specific coin and grade when those coins are available.
