Poll Question
Hi folks and fellow numismatists. As the year draws to an end I can't help but reflect upon the many coin acquisitions made during this year. It was an awesome year for me; I have been collecting for many years but not so vehemently as I did in 2017. This year was kind of a "renaissance" for me and I really dove into the hobby. The excitement of the hunt, the nerve wrecking auction sessions where you're sitting there hoping no one else bids on your coins of interest, and if they do, they better not win, or else, and finally the joy you get when that gem finally arrives at your doorstep. And of course... the pure pleasure you get from paying off your purchases... Speaking of which, how much damage did you do your wallets this year? I was well into five figures. But heck, I was "investing" right? In hindsight, perhaps investing in a different kind of coin, a virtual one, would have been a far better "investment".

Lots to consider... including subscriptions, supplies, memberships, books, secure storage fees, coin show fees...all those alone can easily add up to hundreds of dollars, let alone the actual coins / notes / bullion purchased.

Valid point. Not thinking that many many of the members in CCF are dealers and their costs are far more difficult to track. I guess I'd look at this from the perspective of a hobbyist (so if you're a dealer and a hobbyist, what was the financial impact to you for 2017 for your collection only) and include everything you spent to feed your hobby in 2017 (coins/bullion/notes, supplies, and various fees).

I haven't tallied everything yet but I expect that my numismatic expenditures in 2017 are very near to or beyond my previous record year. It has been fun but my wallet is considerably depleted.

I only purchased 38 coins all year. But the average coin was low 4 figures. I no longer buy anything that I don't absolutely love. No thanks, I don't want bargains. No thanks, I don't want raw. Of the 38: 1 from ebay, 9 from Stacks, 5 from Great Collections, and 13 from Heritage.

I don't believe it's advisable for any one of us to disclose how much we spent on our coins or currency this year . Some things are better off left under the rug .

With the birth of my beautiful daughter and her week of NICU and a couple weeks of hurricane evacuation and cleanup, I can't claim I did much to make too many very jealous. Did some trading to acquire a couple things. I'm grateful it wasn't a goose egg for the year, and the few things I added fit perfectly into my hoard, so it's been a good year to be alive and also a collector.

Hope it doesn't get out that I spent tens of dollars this year.

Without looking at the choices, I was ready to pick "Too much".
I spent "tens of dollars" too. I'm just not saying how many tens that is.

The nice thing about the hobby is you can spend little or a lot and still come out with something nice and interesting to most everyone. Whether CRH or just filling those holes, if you're interested in coin collecting then you can do it on most budgets.
I didn't vote btw, as I am invoking the T-Bop protocol.

@Collects82 - congrats on the birth of your daughter! NICU is scary at first but quickly you realize how awesome those people are and that your child is absolutely in the right place. Busy year for you. Understandable that numismatics took a back seat.

I struggled this year to remain interested due mostly to outside influences such as work and co-chairing the fledgling local Archeological Society as well as personal indulgences not related to numismatics, so I ended up spending less than $1000. I did however sell off most of the nearly 50,000 wheat cents I had hoarded up in a closet at the request (demand) of the lovely little woman that has put up with me for the last 31 years, and made a tidy profit doing so.

Probably $20K or more, mostly on TPG material but I still buy raw and submit directly to NGC.

Quote:Of the 38: 1 from ebay, 9 from Stacks, 5 from Great Collections, and 13 from Heritage. Where did the rest of them come from? I count 28. Thanks to everyone for sharing so far, very interesting stuff. thought I was the only one that was crazy for spending so much but clearly I am not the only one. It is good to be in the company of so many fellow nut jobs I am an accountant by trade so I keep detailed records of my expenditures down to the penny in an Excel spreadsheet. Everything is captured, shipping costs, FX fees, misc, fees, etc and allocated pro-rata to the respective coins purchased. Anyone else out there that does something similar?
